Brain and Smoke Tanning

Learn the ancient art of making brain tan leather.

Turn a raw skin into strong, supple, velvety leather from start to finish in this 4 day intensive.

You will learn every step of the brain tan process from meaty, fatty rawhide into finished buckskin.

Learn the methodology of leather making that can be applied to any sort of hide: fur, hair, feathered, or scaled.

We will explore ethnographical and cultural histories of leather traditions from around the world, including European traditions.

Buckskin isn’t only about creating a beautiful hide in the ways of old. It is about exploring our relationship to the wild world, what we have to offer them, and the alchemical transformations in ourselves and our practice that happens when we dedicate ourselves in this way. We will employ song and story to help traverse the mythic realms of deer and hunter, leather and craft, weaving webs of mystery and indebtedness across the ether of our being.

Class Includes:

  • Four days of hands-on instruction with Harmony Cronin

  • Every day a ranch-to-table lunch and dinner will be cooked up for the class using meat we harvested, fresh organic vegetables from our garden, and other organic staples by Sarah Bellum

  • A canvas tent will be provided for communal sleeping if needed

  • Take home your handmade buckskin!
